Electronic Engineering

Powering smart products and connected devices through collaborative electronic design from our team in Cambridge

Whether you’re a founder looking to develop an innovative electronic product, or an established firm with an existing product facing the challenges of capacity, in-house capability, or product obsolescence, our experienced team of electronic design consultants is here to guide you through the process.

Working with our skilled electronic product development team means you can:

  • Extend the lifetime value and increase the margin on older, established products
  • Solve the problem of cost-down value engineering
  • Add capacity and capability to in-house teams
  • Expand market reach into new segments through IoT product development
  • Apply state-of-the-art technology to address commercial challenges

Our electronic design service in practice

First, we need to pinpoint the requirements of this stage – what are the Must haves, Should haves, Could-haves, and, importantly, Wont-haves?

Our proof of concept analysis and feasibility assessment will derisk the process as early on in the product development process as possible. Together, we can decide where compromises have to be made before moving to high-level design and prototyping.

These could be:

  • Operating costs and target for the bill of materials
  • Development time and cost
  • Product size and power requirements
  • Product lifetime and reliability
  • Determine accuracy, sensitivity, resolution and performance metrics

Throughout the hardware development process, our electronic engineers work closely with colleagues in industrial design, software engineering and mechanical engineering at our HQ in Cambridge, giving you shared expertise across a team of highly experienced product development specialists.

Our involvement often continues beyond the initial development to ensure the highest level of electronic product design. Our electronic engineering team in Cambridge may work closely with a Contract Electronics Manufacturer to refine test procedures, analyse batch test results, and conduct minor design updates in response to component availability issues.

Electronic product development can include

  • Requirements definition and refinement, and early-stage proof-of-concepts
  • Exploration of architectural options and trade-offs (e.g. CPU vs FPGA, modular vs. chip-down implementation, wireless technology selection)
  • Component selection, specialist supply-chain engagement (e.g. for cost refinement, obsolescence monitoring, product lifetime awareness)
  • Schematic capture using industry-standard tools
  • PCB layout (including stack-up and technology selection), generation of 3D models for integration with mechanical models
  • PCB bring-up, test and design validation (e.g. environmental testing, beyond-the-limits testing)
  • Configuration management and change management
  • Securing market access (e.g. early pre-compliance testing to de-risk design, full compliance testing)
  • Cost-down, value engineering
  • IoT consulting, IoT product design, IoT product development service
  • Sensor technology exploration and optimisation
  • Transfer to manufacture and meeting regulatory compliance (EMC, RED, FCC)
